Monday morning Grouse dog Training

Ladies & Gentlemen,
Its the 22nd of October on a Monday morning and although it was quite warm after 10AM the training on wild birds was just fantastic, Heston our Ryman pup is just starting to come into his own and with a little help form his mentor, he set both a woodcock and Grouse for gunning this morning. Using my 28 Gauge L.C. Smith double gun, the gunning was quick and very challenging. Hestons work on the Grouse was exceptional for a young dog on a warm day, the 2nd bird, a Woodcock actually flused back in my face and I dropped her with a nice rising head on shot.
The Grouse was a runner that Daisy helped Heston set up, the younger Setter got a lesson in how to be a professional Grouse dog, and he learned by cutting the mature Grouse off without spooking him into flight, I flushed and took him rising up thru the Hemlock trees. Daisy did not let Heston retrieve, so he followed her in as she presented me with the Grouse. A great training morning in the Potter/Tioga big woods, hope your morning was just as enjoyable as mine.

Justin,
Heston is just starting to come into his own, he had some fool fire repetative 12 Gauge heavy shells out side my kennel, that person better never let me find out his identity. Heston is coming along with the use of the 28 Gauge double gun. See you on Friday!

Re: Monday morning Grouse dog Training

Gentlemen,
The training day continued at about 4PM, with more great points and some decent shooting by the trainer, the dogs ended the training day with a Grouse limit and two
Woodcock. The 28 Guage L.C. Smith is a dream to shoot with
IC & SK1 chokes, SpreadR 8 loads in the 1st BBl and Fiocchi
or B&P's in the SK1. 4 for 5 on the day, the last Grouse I had to shoot twice to knock down for the dogs. All in all a great training day, even on the 69-70 degree day. Not a bad mixed wild bird training day for the pup.
