Ditto. Do most all of my deer hunting in Washington County. There are definitely nice buck down there. Very nice. But not like Allegheny County.

@Fleroo
We never picked up a skull less than an 8pt unless it had character. Most of this was public land or mine land (lots of farms are bought by the mine and left to rot.)

Sure you might find a sliver of land in Allegheny County that holds deer. But I'm telling ya, drive 45 mins down I-79, use google earth, and get down to Greene..

Its rugged (steep ridges, incised creeks) and its a big rural area. Its polluted with does too. I couldnt imagine hunting there without getting a shot at a deer... even on SGL's.

Fair Warning - Its steep country. Look up "Waynesburg Hills Section" geologists classify that area uniquely because of its steepness.

I thought most landowners give permission to everyone in the cooperative program. I have asked several and never been denied. I figured if the land ower signed up for it they would let anyone hunt who asked. At least that's what the folks I asked told me.

Re: Pittsburgh Bow Hunting

What's been said about some of the southern counties is true. Greene and Washington counties hold a ton of deer, period. There are a lot of big bucks, too. My dad works in Avella (Washington county, near Ohio border) and tells me on a weekly basis of the deer that he sees. The game lands in that area also contain a huge amount of deer, but first day of rifle is bound to be packed. A buddy of mine solely hunts game lands in those counties and has harvested a few bruisers. He's willing to go in places other people aren't, and that's the difference.

Re: Pittsburgh Bow Hunting

Greene county-good advice But a lot of the landowners there are as tight as those around Pittsburgh.

And that airport property, I believe you have to put your name in a drawing for permission there.

Hunting: 10% skill and 90% location.

If co-ops and private land isn't working out, as others have said there is a lot of public land around within an hour of Southside. Western Washington County has a ton of SGL and state parks. The PGC website has maps of the SGLs(117, 303, 232, 245), plus you have Hillman and Raccoon Creek State Parks, and Cross Creek County Park.

Re: Pittsburgh Bow Hunting

We hunted the SGL's in Greene and Washington Counties for a few years. Always saw deer, several large racks. The biggest bucks we saw were near Ryerson Station State Park, across from the camping entrance (McNay Ridge Road). If I remember correctly, there is a creek you need to cross. Another great area was in Washington County off of Longstreath Road, just above Good Intent.

I'd rather be hunting
