"They thermoregulate (control their temperature) by panting with their mouth open or through heat loss through the unfeathered legs and feet."
Since heat loss is through the unfeathered legs and feet, I assume their panting is because on the nest, the legs are tucked under, and hold warmth for the eggs.
I had a friend that had parrots and when his would breath heavy and tritch their tails he took them to the vets and usually it was a upper respiratory issue which they recovered from.
I see what you mean on the cam but the bird seems healthy and maybe this is just ruffling the feathers to allow it to cool off a bit, since it can't fly like it would if it wasn't sitting on eggs.
If we can see it I am sure PGC and DCNR can too and they would move in if the bird was in distress.
She just brought a fish to the nest and waved pieces of it in the eaglet's nose before swallowing it herself. Maybe to get the eaglet salivating? Eagles regurgitate food for their young just like other birds, right?
just tuned in and no one was on the nest just the chick and the egg....then off in the distance saw a great big bird chasing what appeared to be a crow.... then lost them in view... then both parents landed at the nest..
I noticed that a few times. I think it keeps getting picked on (pecked) by his/her sibling. I saw it happen a few times, getting rapped with the other's beak. When it does happen, the one that's hit drops and kind of plays dead. Once it happened, and when Mom (Dad?) started the feeding ritual, it popped back up.
I notice both are molting about the same, so maybe it is a playing possum thing? I sure hope so.
I also was watching Saturday for a bit, and one was fed too big of piece of fish. Started chirping and making all sorts of noises. The parent tried feeding it again, and it wouldnt take any. The parent put its beak against the babies throat almost like He She knew what was wrong.
Two things I've learned watching the Eagles.
If you eat nothing but dead, stinky stuff it gives you the squirts.
Don't go trout fishing near an Eagle nest.
It is fun watching!
and eating everything in site.... keeps mom & pop busy!! I check in most every day and not many scraps left lying around these days...
