Do your walks and biking at higher elevations- pick up the intensity with your aerobic exercise as well. Try to lose as much weight as you can before the hunt. So, get on a good eating regimen of 5 small meals a day every three others- no fried foods, simple carbs, fast food, and absolutely limit your alcohol. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, Lean meat, fish, legumes, and esential fats should be your staples

For those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They will soar on wings as eagles..

Get your pack, put 20 pounds in it, and hike around your area using the hills as much as possible! Best of luck!

Re: what the best way to get in shape for a elk hunt

I'm headed out in about 10 days for archery season.

I picked up an army surplus Molle frame with rucksack, put weight in it, and hiked the mountains near me. Still, I am not in the shape I would like to be but am better off then when I started 10 or so weeks ago when I decided to go out west.

I burn wood pellets so I used those for weight. Eventually I put a 50# of lime in the pack and do 5 mile hikes with it.

Make an appointment with your doc. Tell him what you are planning so he can give you a physical maybe even a stress test just to be safe.

I would get the Insanity workout and follow the program especially the diet. I am on it now and love it. IT wil get you in shape. No equipment required and takes about an hour a day.

Traditions only last if you pass them down to your kids!

If possible, go out a few days early, to allow time to get acclimated to the altitude.

See yout doctor for a complete physical.

If cleared start hiking hills with the boots you'll be wearing on the trip and I'd say 30 to 40 pounds in your pack. You can start at 10 pounds and work your way up.

Carry aspirin and water with you on hikes and when hunting.

Go on a 2000 calorie 175 carb diet ... I lost 7 pounds in 3 weeks with minimal excercise with it. its 3 meals 500 cal 45 carbs each and 2 snacks 250 cal 20 carbs each.

I rarely go over my limit and rarely feel hungry.

Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes, well, he eats you.

+1. Elk hunts can be rough. Good luck and be careful.
